HOW THE LEWES POUND SUPPORTS FOOD BANK CLIENTS AND LOCAL BUSINESSES

The Lewes Pound is creating a mini circular economy in Lewes. Envelopes of Lewes Pounds are given to local food bank clients  who in turn  support the Lewes economy by spending their notes in local independent businesses. This Donate-a-Drink scheme  is supported by Cheese Please, Depot, Harveys Brewery Shop, Seasons and the Patisserie where customers simply ask to add a ‘Foodbank donation’ of £3 to their bill.

Debbie Twitchen, MBE from Landport food bank has said, “Our foodbank clients are always thrilled to receive an envelope of Lewes Pounds. We know they are then able to treat themselves and their families to presents, food or outings by spending the LPs in a variety of local businesses. Most recently they have tended to spend them at the Depot or at Richard’s the butchers.”

Since the Donate-a-Drink scheme started in 2018 the Lewes Pound has given out some 9,500 Lewes Pounds.  These small donations together make a big difference to those who need it most and then go on to support the Lewes economy as they must be spent in local businesses.

If you or your business would like to help food bank clients have a small treat by using a local business please remember to ask for £3 to be added to your bill when you visit participating businesses:-

  1. Surely this is not the latest bit of news?
Where’s details of the next issue of notes?

  2. Hi Peter,

The next issue would not be available until this time next year and we wouldn’t even be discussing it until early 2025.
