Only a few weeks to go now until the new issue of the Lewes Pound hits the streets. Design is well advanced on all four denominations and the artwork will soon be with the printers, so that they can put in the necessary security features. We expect to have the notes available on the first Saturday in May. They will be available at our usual stall in the farmers’ market and also up at the Chalk Life Festival on Landport Bottom, which kicks off all the festivities around the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Lewes.
The designs on the back of the LP1 and LP5 notes will reflect the Battle. We ran a school design competition for the LP1 note and hope to be able to announce the winner shortly, while the LP5 note will carry the Battle of Lewes logo designed by local artist Tom Walker. His design will also feature on the commemorative badges being produced for the occasion. The Lewes Pound CIC has ordered 100 of these and they will be given away to the first 100 people who exchange £20 or more for our new notes. They will be a lasting memento after you have spent your new notes in local shops and on local produce.
